We hosted our August virtual meeting on August 26, 2026, featuring an exceptional presentation by Marilyne Kpetemey, Ph.D., Medical Lead at AstraZeneca and a cancer biologist with extensive expertise in oncology drug development and medical affairs.

Dr. Kpetemey’s powerful talk emphasized a central truth: Africa does not need to wait for perfect infrastructure to make progress. By leveraging AI, local data, regional collaborations, and scalable diagnostic solutions, African nations can leap-frog traditional barriers and accelerate earlier detection, equitable access, and research inclusion.

  • Initiatives like H3Africa demonstrate what African-led genomic research can achieve—biobanks, bioinformatics networks, ethical governance, and continent-wide scientific output.

Clinical Trial Underrepresentation

  • In 2023, only 4% of global trials were hosted by African countries.

AI can support point-of-care screening, triage, and remote diagnostics bringing high-quality detection tools closer to underserved communities.

“How do we engage young African men in their own healthcare?”

Education in basic biology, community-based outreach, and strengthening patient–physician relationships at the primary care level are essential. These are the same challenges that are populations in the West face.

“What is the future of cancer treatment if Africa remains underrepresented in clinical trials?”

Without representation, treatment guidelines may remain misaligned with African disease biology. AI can accelerate trial readiness by improving patient identification, data capture, and decentralized trial models.

“How can AI help accelerate clinical trial adoption across Africa?”

AI can streamline recruitment, support digital monitoring, and reduce operational barriers—making trials more feasible across diverse regions.
